Welcome to the first part of our complete tutorial series on building a modern Learning Management System (LMS) from scratch. In this series, we’ll create a fast, SEO-friendly, and production-ready platform where teachers can create courses and students can learn all using the latest “modern” tech stack in 2026.

Today in Part 1, we focus on the rock-solid foundation: choosing the right tools, initializing the project, setting up a beautiful UI, designing the database, adding authentication, and connecting to a cloud database.

Let’s dive in!

1. Tech Stack Selection (The “Modern” Way)

Why this exact combination? Because it delivers blazing-fast performance, excellent SEO, type safety, and developer happiness everything you need for a professional LMS.

Framework: Next.js (App Router) – Server Components, automatic code-splitting, file-based routing, and built-in SEO optimizations (metadata API, Open Graph, etc.).
Styling: Tailwind CSS + Shadcn/UI – Utility-first styling + beautiful, accessible, copy-paste components. No more fighting with CSS frameworks.
Database: PostgreSQL (via Supabase or Neon) – Relational power with JSON flexibility. Perfect for courses, chapters, progress tracking, and payments.
ORM: Prisma – Best-in-class TypeScript experience, schema migrations, and studio for visual editing.
Auth: Clerk – Lightning-fast social/email login, built-in role-based access (teacher vs student), and secure middleware.

2. Project Initialization & Folder Structure

Open your terminal and run:

npx create-next-app@latest my-lms --typescript --tailwind --eslint --app

Choose “Yes” for the App Router and Tailwind when prompted.

After installation, your project should look clean and scalable. Here’s the recommended folder structure we’ll follow throughout the series:

3. Setup UI & Design System (Shadcn/UI)

LMS interfaces need cards, dialogs, accordions, tables, and forms. Shadcn/UI gives us production-grade components with zero bloat.

Run these commands:

npx shadcn@latest init
npx shadcn@latest add button card dialog accordion form input label avatar separator badge

Install Lucide React for icons (books, play, users, etc.):

npm install lucide-react

You now have a beautiful, accessible design system ready to use. Every component is fully customizable with Tailwind and comes with TypeScript support.

4. Database Architecture (ERD) & Prisma

Relational data is essential for an LMS. Here’s our real-world schema.prisma (simplified for Part 1 we’ll expand it later):

5. Authentication Integration (Clerk)

Clerk is the fastest way to add secure, beautiful auth with role-based access.

Go to clerk.com → Sign up → Create a new application.
Copy your Publishable Key and Secret Key.
Install Clerk: npx clerk@latest add
Create middleware.ts in the root:

6. Cloud Database Integration

No local PostgreSQL installation needed! We’ll use Supabase (free tier is excellent).

Go to supabase.com → New Project.
Wait for the database to be ready.
Copy the Connection String (Database URL).
Add to .env.local:

DATABASE_URL="postgresql://..."

Push the schema:

npx prisma db push
npx prisma generate

Your database is now live in the cloud and fully synced with Prisma!
