Technological limitations, such as constraints in developing fully eco-friendly hardware, add further complexity. Moreover, inconsistent government regulations pose a significant barrier. Without robust regulations or incentives, companies lack motivation to invest in sustainability. Varying regulations across countries create additional challenges for multinational corporations, while the absence of global standards stifles sustainable innovation.

Beyond technical and financial barriers, social and organizational dynamics significantly shape the implementation of IT sustainability. While factors such as fear of failure, lack of clear accountability, and limited internal capacity were once major obstacles, growing public awareness and shifting consumer expectations have transformed these into powerful drivers. According to the PwC Voice of the Consumer Survey (2024), consumers are willing to pay an average of 9.7% more for sustainably produced products, while a McKinsey NielsenIQ study (2023) shows that products with ESG-related claims achieved 28% cumulative growth over five years, compared to 20% for products without such claims. Investor expectations are also rising 72% of investors now review companies’ ESG performance (EY, 2023), and around 90% of public companies publish sustainability reports (KEY ESG, 2024).

These trends highlight that sustainability is no longer optional but essential for competitiveness, reputation, and stakeholder trust. To respond effectively, companies must embed sustainability metrics into KPIs, establish accountability structures, and ensure leadership commitment turning social and structural challenges into strategic opportunities.
