OpenAI just dropped a new feature in GPT-4o, and the internet is buzzing. Imagine this: you upload a regular selfie, and a few seconds later, you’re transformed into a character straight out of Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro. The trend is now lovingly called “Ghiblification.”

Even OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, jumped on the train and made a Ghibli-style illustration his profile picture. At first glance, it’s all fun and fantasy. But dig a little deeper, and not everyone’s thrilled about this AI magic trick.

Fans Love It. Artists? Not So Much.

For everyday users, the idea of seeing your pet or your backyard turned into something out of a Studio Ghibli film is delightful. It’s whimsical, nostalgic, and weirdly flattering. But for professional illustrators and animators, this update feels less like innovation, and more like imitation.

The controversy reignited old footage of Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, who’s famously wary of AI in art. In the 2016 NHK documentary The Never-Ending Man, Miyazaki was shown an AI-generated zombie animation. His reaction? Disgust.

“Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is,” he said.

To Miyazaki, art should come from human experience, not algorithms. And that’s a hard stance to argue against, especially coming from one of animation’s most beloved legends.

OpenAI Says: “We’re Being Respectful”

OpenAI insists they’re not crossing the line. According to their technical paper and interviews with the press, GPT-4o avoids mimicking the exact style of living artists. The model was trained using publicly available data and content from licensed partners like Shutterstock.

They’ve even created an opt-out form for artists who want their work excluded from future training sets, and say they respect web scraping restrictions. But critics remain skeptical, because style isn’t copyrighted, but distinctive elements of an artist’s work? That’s a legal gray area.

The Bigger Threat: What Happens to Designers?

This update isn’t just a cool trick. For graphic designers, concept artists, and animators, it signals something deeper: the automation of imagination.

Artist Karla Ortiz, currently suing AI companies over copyright violations, called this trend “exploitative.” She was especially enraged when someone used a Ghibli-style image to promote a political agenda, turning something beautiful into something unsettling.

“To see something as brilliant as Miyazaki’s work reduced to this is just disgusting,” she wrote on social media.

So, Is This a Milestone or a Misstep?

Depends who you ask.

Some will say this is the future, where everyone can create art without needing years of practice. Others will say it’s a slippery slope where AI replaces not just labor, but meaning.
