In the rapidly advancing digital era, Indonesia’s information technology (IT) sector faces significant challenges in achieving environmental sustainability. According to a report by the Asian Development Bank, data centers in Indonesia consumed approximately 1.5% of the nation’s total power generation capacity in 2014, with projections estimating an increase to 2.0% – 3.0% by 2017, offering potential energy savings of up to 30% through efficiency measures (Asian Development Bank, 2014). IT Sustainability refers to strategies aimed at reducing the environmental impact of IT operations, including minimizing energy consumption in data centers, managing electronic waste (e-waste), and reducing carbon footprints from cloud computing infrastructure. With global data growth expected to reach 175 zettabytes by 2025, driven in part by the digitalization of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia, emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and the Internet of Things (IoT) have emerged as critical tools to address these challenges.

In Indonesia, government initiatives, such as those proposed by the Ministry of Finance to integrate AI for energy efficiency and waste reduction, form a foundational framework ((Kementerian Keuangan Republik Indonesia, 2023). These technologies not only enhance operational efficiency but also enable real-time energy optimization and comprehensive environmental impact reduction. This article explores in depth how AI, ML, and IoT can be leveraged to achieve these goals, supported by real-world examples from Indonesian companies and initiatives, implementation strategies, and considerations of challenges. This approach aligns with global objectives such as Net Zero Emissions, where AI plays a pivotal role in stabilizing national energy grids by rapidly detecting anomalies, as explored by the Indonesian government in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation forum (OIC, 2024).

The Role of AI in Optimizing Energy Efficiency

AI has become a cornerstone of transformation in IT sustainability in Indonesia, primarily through its ability to analyze big data to identify inefficiencies. In data centers, AI can predict workloads and dynamically adjust resource allocation, reducing energy waste by up to 40% in some cases (Intel Indonesia, 2023). The concept of “Green AI” has emerged as an approach focused on optimizing algorithms and hardware efficiency to minimize environmental impact, ensuring AI is not only used for general tasks but also designed to reduce energy consumption during model training.

A key application is in sustainable data centers, where AI analyzes operations to allocate resources efficiently. For instance, Telkomsel, through its AI-based IoT Envion service, monitors energy usage in real time, optimizing cooling systems and power distribution in IT infrastructure, which has been implemented across various locations in Indonesia to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Telkomsel, 2024). Additionally, AI supports building energy management by integrating smart systems that predict demand and optimize power distribution, as seen in the green data center in Cikarang, which uses AI to automatically adjust cooling based on workload. However, a challenge arises as AI itself is energy-intensive; for example, training large AI models can generate carbon emissions equivalent to a transatlantic flight, necessitating strategies such as using green data centers powered by renewable energy (Green Data Center Indonesia, 2023).

In a broader context, AI contributes to pollution reduction through energy data analysis from production to consumption. For example, in urban transportation related to IT, AI optimizes data center logistics to reduce carbon emissions, as implemented by Siemens Energy in Indonesia to enhance energy efficiency in commercial buildings (Siemens Energy Indonesia, 2024). A study from the University of Indonesia indicates that while AI increases data center emissions, solutions such as energy-efficient algorithms can reverse this trend, supporting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices among local companies (University of Indonesia, 2023). Furthermore, AI supports initiatives like “sustainable AI ecosystems” that extend beyond basic infrastructure, incorporating holistic strategies to integrate AI with renewable energy sources, as discussed in the United Nations forum on AI for Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2024).

Integration of Machine Learning for Environmental Impact Reduction

Machine Learning (ML), a subset of AI, enhances energy efficiency in Indonesia’s IT operations by learning from historical data to optimize systems. In cloud computing, ML predicts computational needs, reducing unnecessary server use and cutting energy consumption by up to 30%. PT Perkebunan Nusantara III achieved similar efficiency gains by integrating ML with IoT (PTPN III, 2023). In sustainable manufacturing, ML minimizes resource use, waste, and emissions, such as in e-waste management by PT Imani Prima (PT Imani Prima, 2024).

The concept of “Green IT in Machine Learning” focuses on reducing energy use across the ML lifecycle, aligning with Indonesia’s automation initiatives. Practices like MLOps for Green AI and carbon-aware scheduling used in Green Data Center projects help balance innovation with environmental responsibility (University Multimedia Nusantara, 2023). While large-scale ML training poses emission challenges, solutions like algorithm optimization and efficient hardware are advancing sustainable AI adoption in Indonesia’s data centers.

Utilization of IoT for Real-Time Monitoring and Control

The Internet of Things (IoT) complements AI and ML by providing real-time sensor data for monitoring and optimizing energy use in Indonesia’s IT infrastructure. In data centers, IoT sensors track temperature, humidity, and power consumption, enabling AI-driven automatic adjustments that cut cooling energy by 20–30% (Telkomsel, 2024). IoT also supports “energy-aware environments” in homes and businesses through smart metering, as seen in Telkomsel’s IoT Envion initiative.

In renewable energy, IoT enables smart grid management by integrating renewable data to optimize distribution and reduce fossil fuel reliance, exemplified by PLN’s Green Energy as a Service (GEAS) (PLN, 2024). It also supports predictive maintenance for wind turbines and solar panels, improves supply chain efficiency in manufacturing, and reduces emissions in sectors like mining (Telkomsel, 2024). Additionally, IoT-driven smart grids help cut greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with Green IT practices adopted by companies like Chandra Asri (Chandra Asri, 2023).

While IoT devices consume energy themselves, integrating them with renewable sources mitigates this challenge. Overall, IoT advances Indonesia’s sustainable energy goals by predicting demand, optimizing usage, and supporting eco-friendly urban development.

Challenges and Future Prospects
